HISTORY and ACCOMPLISHMENTS of THE MISSISSIPPI CHAPTER
Third Decade 1986-1996

As the Mississippi Chapter began its third decade, there was a new and enthusiastic cadre of outstanding leadership, both Professional and Industry, taking charge and moving the Chapter ahead with new life and directions. Membership expands beyond just Architects and Construction members to add, Landscape Architects, Interior Designers, Lawyers, Insurance Specialist, etc. The Executive Committee expands to include six members as Officers and six members as Directors. This gives an opportunity for growth and learning as well as preparing for future leadership. Committees expanded to number 12, each covering the many facets of needs to serve the Chapter. In the spring of 1987, under the leadership of Conference Chairman Glen A. Lewis and President James W. Vinson, the Chapter hosted the Regional Conference in Natchez. For the first time, the Chapter successfully offered educational seminars for the membership and the public as well as educational seminars at the annual Products Show. Leadership in this area began first with Paul West and then Jerry K. Webb while serving as Education Chairmen of the Chapter. These seminars were all day events and usually occurred on the day of a regular Chapter meeting. This idea was expanded for the first time in conjunction with the Annual Products Show in 1989, with Education Seminars under the direction, first, of Robert V. M. Harrison, and next by Calvin R. Sibley, Gary W. LaRose, Robert Forman and Keith West, serving as Education Chairmen. Obtaining Certified Construction Specifier designation were Phillip L. McDade, Percy D. Wilkerson, and Albert R. Duncan. Obtaining Construction Documents Technologist designation were Vickie Albritton, Robert E. Campbell, Louis Dunn, Richard L. Harrison, Connie Miller, Jim Reed, Richard J. Sleepy, Dennis S. Walters, and Keith West. Obtaining Certified Construction Products Representative designation was Thomas L. Clarke, Jr. Other outreach began with the Certified Construction Specifier and the Construction Documents Technologist programs having study courses first led by Lynton B. Cooper, then Robert V. M. Harrison and finally by Percy D. "Don" Wilkerson. Regional Leadership roles began with Gary W. LaRose serving as a Regional Technical Chairman, Thomas L. Clarke, Jr., serving as a Regional Certification Chairman and Technical Chairman, and Phillip L. McDade serving as Regional Awards Chairman. At the Institute level, Robert V. M. Harrison served on the Education Committee and Thomas L. Clarke on the CCPR Subcommittee.

Awards began to come to the Chapter from the Region and the Institute. Regional Awards in 1987 went to the Chapter for the largest growth of a Chapter in the Region and a Region Certificate of Appreciation to Calvin Sibley for serving as Membership Chairman for the Chapter. Regional Awards in 1988 went to the Mississippi Chapter as an Education Commendation for the years of support to the students in the School of Architecture at Mississippi State University and to the students in the School of Engineering Technology at the University of Southern Mississippi. Robert V. M. Harrison also received a Regional Education Commendation Award for the many years of introducing the students in the School of Architecture at Mississippi State University to the resources of the Mississippi Chapter. An Institute Award came to the Chapter in 1988 at the Annual Convention in Washington, D.C., with the awarding of an Educational Commendation for the years of supporting the students at both Mississippi State University and the University of Southern Mississippi. An Institute Award, the J. Norman Hunter Memorial Award for outstanding contributions to CSI through education, was given to Robert V. M. Harrison in 1989 at the Annual Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana. In 1991, another high honor came to the Chapter at the Institute's Annual Convention in San Diego, California, when Robert V. M. Harrison was advanced to Fellowship in the Institute. Continuing to serve the Region, the Chapter hosted the Regional Leadership Conference in August, 1991 in Jackson under the Chairmanship of Glen A. Lewis. At the Region Conference in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1992, the Chapter received a Special Publication Award for its 25th Anniversary Directory, and a Certificate of Appreciation to Gary W. LaRose. In 1993, at the Region Conference in Little Rock, Arkansas, the Chapter received a Technical Award for publishing the "Recommended Guide for Bidding Procedure", an award for its Transfer of Leadership Seminar, and Diane Kyzar received an award for the Most Improved Newsletter. Also, the Chapter received a Technical Commendation for the "Recommended Guide for Bidding Procedure" from the Institute at the 1993 Convention at Houston, Texas. In New Orleans, at the 1994 Region Conference, Thomas L. Clarke, Jr., received a Technical Commendation. The Chapter received an Education Commendation from the Institute at the 1994 Convention at San Francisco for the Transfer of Power Meeting.
